Hey folks, I'm new to the area, living in Ballston and working on North Capitol. Any suggestions for good local knitting shops or friendly stitch n' bitches? Thanks!

My Mom clipped me an article about D.C. Knitting Groups in the Post. I also found this resource.

Has anyone heard of any groups that knit things for the patients at Walter Reed?

10:07 am - needle size question

page5grrl
I want to adapt this pattern to this yarn.

The pattern calls for WW yarn and needle sizes 3 and 13, but the stuff I want to use is super bulky.

How should I adjust the needle size for heavier yarn? I was thinking a 11 - 15 for the small size, but I'm not sure about the big size.

I'm thinking about this one, but open to suggestions.

10:32 am - the curse

secretlifeof_em
i have a new evolution in the curse of the boyfriend sweater. my darling, mostly sweet (ok, somewhat sweet, mostly obnoxious) boyfriend, abfarrer has never shown any interest in my knitting him a sweater or anything else wearable. i think this is because usually i pick out the worst, fun-furriest meets ribbon and bobble yarn i can find and insist it's perfect for him.

one of his favorite shows ever was Firefly (gaining momentum again after the release of the movie Serenity)- so i got him the box set for christmas and we spent the last couple weeks watching it. it's a really great show, but anyways, slowly rounding the corner to get to a point here- i found a community, bigdamnknitters which talks about the knitted stuff on the show, mostly the jayne hat (which granted, is AWESOME)- but i can't imagine andy ever wearing it.

no no. watching the show, and perusing various fan websites, my beloved, 6'6" boyfriend decides he wants this sweater. which, again, is flipping AWESOME, and it's not that i don't think i could knit it, it's just that there doesn't appear to be a pattern anywhere for it- which kinda makes me want to cry. i promised him i'd try, but it would take me a long time- i hope these lovely folks come up with, and post a pattern before i have to give it a try. that's one hell of a task for a girls first sweater.

**sigh**

just thought i'd share my doom.

I finally finished a couple of things...

2' x 3' moss stitch throw rugCollapse )

1x1 ribbed guy scarfCollapse )

Now I'm working on a rug for myself with the cheap yarn I bought for practice. It involves 28 skinny garter stitch strips sewn together. Pattern from The Knitted Rug.

10:59 am - yarn question

page5grrl
Earlier this year I bought some chEaP 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn for teaching myself and practice.

Now I have A LOT left and I want to make things out of it, the only problem is it's kind of stiff and scratchy, not very soft.

My question is - is there a way to soften this yarn and give it a nicer texture? Will it be softer once it's washed?

Do you have suggestions for things to make with scratchy stuff?

My first project with it is the "faggot lace scarf" in Knitting for Dummies. I'm also working on a rug with some heavier yarn. Pictures as soon as something is finished :-)

11:35 am - Orphanage donations, revisited...

pbhgirl
I've decided not to post on knitting, because I don't want to put too much of my personal info out there, and I only have limited space to take donations with me to China. But it seemed like there was pretty good interest here, so let me know if you'd still like to participate! Feel free to knit anything you think would be appropriate for a kid... pretty much from birth through teen years. If you're interested, please email me at PBH175@aol.com and I will send you my mailing info. Also, post here, because I am spacy from the wait for my referral and will probably forget. ;) Depending upon which month I receive the referral (it could be as early as this FRIDAY!), I will let you know when the rough deadline to submit donations would be. I would travel 6-8 weeks after referral. Thanks so much, you guys rock. :)

9:18 am - Charity knitting: I've got a good cause

pbhgirl
Any extra yarn out there? Ahem, Nicole. *g*

I'll be going to China in 3-ish months to pick up my daughter, and I was thinking it would be great to take a big bag of handknits for the orphanage. Hats, scarves, blankets, felted tote bags... ok, maybe not the latter, you can save *those* for me. ;)

It's not just the tiny kids, either. There are lots of older kids/teens, so you could maybe do something a little funky and fun for them.

Anybody interested?

7:41 pm - Jackpot!

etinterrapax
Wow, I found my good yarn stash in the back of my closet. I knew this cleaning frenzy had to be good for something! Now I really want to see what's in there.

Just so this isn't pointless for the rest of you, I said before that I had the magazines for the Great American Aran Afghan, which we had tossed around as doing for a charity project. Is anyone else still into that? I have lots of yarns that would be suitable--about four skeins of gently-recycled Lamb's Pride Worsted in Oatmeal, and some Lion Brand aran wool in the same condition. I don't know how much yarn it takes to make a square, but I know I've got enough here for several. Shall we talk about the project?

4:49 pm - baby blanket, take 3

skate97
so, i'm thinking of starting the baby blanket again, now that i have the yarn all wound into balls. my question is, do you think i shoudl go buy a pair of circs? because i'm not really too keen on making squares and sewing them together at the end, and i'm afraid even if i do it on long straights, it will bunch too much and be too awkward. i haven't even settled on a pattern yet, and i'm not entirely sure what size to make them on since it's kind of thin yarn, i don't want it to be too full of holes, but i don't want it to take me till he's 21 to finish, either. i think i might either try the big bad baby blanket in snb (though i think that's done with thicker yarn, i'm not sure if it would exactly work with what i have) or just do something like nicole said. all the patterns i'm finding are ones where you switch colors, and i don't want to do that. what do you all think?
